It was no coincidence that Brixham was chosen to become our base in the South West, having already established a stronghold in London operating out of Billingsgate. The desired specification sought, was a second home, preferably in a coastal location and alongside a thriving fishing community.
With a strong and ever expanding portfolio of wholesale customers, Co-Founders, Ben and Robin felt the time was right to ‘get closer to the coalface’ and to start buying directly off the markets and from boats where full traceability could be assured and where quality fish could be hand picked by the buying team themselves.
In 2018 a bold and game changing decision was taken to establish that base in Brixham. Les Daniels, already a well known and accomplished fish buyer on the market, needed no second asking to join the newly formed team and brought with him, not only authenticity and integrity but a wealth of knowledge about the workings of the port and the incredible diversity of seafood on offer. He facilitated the change and with that, instantly strengthened Wright Brothers reputation.
With the scope being widened to buying off a range of different vessels and gear types, our wholesale business became a guarantee for chefs of supreme provenance. Six years later wholesale has grown significantly and we are now supplying over 750 restaurants, pubs and caterers. The standards applied are exemplary and the relationship with the market management is strong. This partnership and understanding means that we have grown to be one of the biggest local buyers of fish and shellfish on the market.
From small beginnings, the depot at Paignton is now a hive of activity and reaches out with fish sales across the UK.
With the pandemic forcing change yet again, our resilience was tested to the max, with the closure of hospitality during that period, but with our true Wright Brothers innovation, the desire to explore new avenues to sell seafood culminated in the development of WB At Home, our online fishmonger in 2020, tapping into a hungry, but as yet largely unexplored market, for fish consumed at home.
In 2021 our newly formed home delivery side took on a new meaning, taking on new premises alongside wholesale, only minutes from the market. With identical ethos in mind, the WB At Home division continues to expand the sale of fresh and frozen seafood daily, right across the UK. The same sustainability, traceability and seasonality traits that underpin the DNA of both WB wholesale and restaurants, now apply to our bespoke online experience that delivers the finest that Brixham Market and their loyal fleet, now encompassing some 40 larger vessels and over 150 smaller day boats, has to offer.
