Here at Wright Brothers Wholesale, we’re not your average nine-to-fivers. With an office and two units located in the heart of Billingsgate Market, the UK’s largest inland fish market, our day or should we say night, typically begins around 10pm when our Night Manager, Ali, reviews all the orders. The rest of the operations and transport department arrive after midnight to prepare themselves for the hustle and bustle.
The Bustling Begins
With all the other wholesalers filling up the market, this is a vibrant time of the day when Billingsgate Market starts to come to life. It’s also our busiest time of the day as all our beautiful sustainable produce, from wild fish to live shellfish and fresh oysters, arrives from 1am-8am. Whilst most of our products are from the UK, they also come from other countries such as France and Spain. They are then quality checked and packed, ready to be delivered to over 280 restaurants that we supply to around London. In between this time, our Purchasing Manager, Marina, starts auctioning for the next day’s fresh goods.
The Buzz Continues
By 7:30am the market grows quieter and as some people finish their day in the unit, others start theirs in the office. Our sales team begin calling the chefs to inform them of the next batch of fresh produce that we have coming in the next day. Then the phones start to ring with the second round of orders, the unit will start to prepare these orders so they are ready to be loaded onto the vans that are returning from their first delivery drops. By midday, while the rest of the city heads out for lunch, it’s the end of the day for our comrades in the unit as they start to pack up ready for home to rest for the next exciting day. However, our office remains open through the day, you could say that this business is 24/6.
